An American Hero named Nick

Nicholas Riccio who turned 19 on the 4th of July,   graduated from West Ashley High School in Charleston, South Carolina in 2003.   Two weeks after high school, Nick joined the Marines to follow a family tradition. Nick's best friend Ryan tells us that Nick wanted to be a Marine since the age of 10.

On Friday, June 18, 2004, while serving our Country, Nicholas Riccio was seriously injured while conducting combat operations in Iraq. A piece of shrapnel from a roadside bomb passed completely through his head leaving this young son in a coma. Three days after the accident Nick's family was notified of his condition.  Within hours after the family learned of the news,  the request for prayers traveled to all corners of the globe. Friends and strangers were asking their friends to keep Nicolas in their prayers. Many area churches had called the family letting them know they were aware of this Lowcountry hero and were praying for him.

Within 24 hours after the prayers were started, the family found out that Nick was out of his coma and en route to Germany. The prayers continued. Wednesday Nick  actually spoke to his parents!  The doctor said he has NEVER seen a patient with such an injury begin to recover so quickly.  There is concerned about the exit wound and what damage it may have caused. His speech is slurred but it may be due to the medications he is on. He really doesn't know what happened he just said, "I got blown up".

Saturday, June 26 Nick arrived in Maryland at the Navy Hospital and is now in Florida to finish up the rest of his rehab.  Before going to Florida, Nick was presented The Purple Heart. Please continue your prayers for Nick and his family.

The photo above of Nick in his uniform is surrounded by pictures of his late grandfather who served in the US Navy in the Korean war as well as his Father & Uncles who served in the Army and Marines.

This page is meant to be shared and to touch your heart reminding you,  One person makes a difference Remember Nick and all the other troops when you are sleeping or out with your family.  This young warrior, as many others, are fighting for our freedom.

I personally did not know this young man fighting for me. Now I now know of him and have a new set of good hearted friends because one person, Jose, took the time to ask for me to take a moment to pray for Nick.  Nick is more than just a solider,  he is a friend, a son, a brother, a nephew, a co worker, a classmate, a member of the community, Nick is a Marine who put his life on the line for Freedom everyday.

If you have a moment, please keep our troops in your daily prayers. The family ask to remember Nick at 1 PM everyday and say a prayer for his recovery.  We have the freedoms we do because of the men and women like Nick who proudly serve our country protecting that freedom. Nick's recovery is not completely over but he is on his final stages at a Rehab Hospital in Tampa, Florida.

"It is easy for us to live victoriously for the Lord when we soar on eagles wings.  But it often takes heroes to keep walking and not faint when trying times come.  The Lord is there when you most fear he has forgotten you. Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and will not faint.  Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)"
